About AMRAH Community Hospital
AMRAH — the Bengali synonym for “WE” — is a non-governmental organization (NGO) based in the village of Barkal, under Chandanaish Upazila, approximately 35 kilometers from the port city of Chittagong, Bangladesh.
The organization is the brainchild of Dr. Mohsin Zillur Karim (MRCP, D-Card, FRCP [London], FACC [USA]), the third son of Dr. Abdul Matin, a renowned pathologist from Chittagong who was actively involved in humanitarian work for the poor and distressed in his village. Inspired by his father’s dream, Dr. Karim — then a fresh medical graduate — established AMRAH in 1987.
When AMRAH began its journey in 1987, the project area was plagued by extreme poverty. The status of women was very low, maternal and child mortality rates were high, birth rates were elevated, and religious fanaticism was deeply rooted. The overall situation was volatile, with women and children being the most neglected in society.
To combat these challenges, AMRAH engaged volunteers to educate and motivate the population on maternal and child health through door-to-door campaigns in eleven selected villages. For the first three years, all expenses were covered by AMRAH’s own resources. Volunteers provided services on a house-to-house basis and were later formally recruited as health workers once funding became available.
Eventually, ODA (a British funding agency) provided financial assistance for maternal and child care on a short-term basis. Since 1995, Terre des Hommes Netherlands has been providing continued financial support for AMRAH’s health care services.
Over time, it became clear that providing only preventive care was not sufficient. A more integrated approach was needed — one that included curative health services. This vision led to the establishment of the AMRAH Community Hospital in 2002, offering comprehensive healthcare under one roof.
With the financial support of Terre des Hommes Netherlands, the hospital now provides specialized healthcare services to the people of Chandanaish, Anwara, Lohagara, Banshkhali, and Satkania Upazilas of the Chittagong district.
